Although many people have sacrificed their lives to get rid of racism, it still partly exists in the society. Although people do not (and they cannot) discriminate other people with their races, it will take time for people to change their thoughts completely. Without even recognizing, people racialize other people; racialization may not seem crucial since it does not hurt other people seriously, but it can eventually set up the stereotype of a person and prohibit people from evaluate that person with his individual characteristics.
It is true that a part of this racialization is based on the fact. For example, most poor nations are in Africa and Africa mostly consists of black people (this is already a stereotype; people who live in the north of the Sahara are mostly Arab people), so some people consider black people lazy and stupid. However, the biggest reasons why African countries are poor are historical and environmental reasons. Historically, western countries have exploited black people and extorted natural resources from Africa. When the World War II was over, they set up the borders between countries without considering African people's races and ethnicities. It have automatically caused conflicts within the countries which are still going on right now, and it have hindered the growth of these countries. Furthermore, as global warming accelerates (also because of the industrialization of western countries), desertification affects the whole continent and also causes many diseases. As we can see from this example, people should check whether they have prejudice or hatred against a certain group of people, since they may have caused the reason for that prejudice, |
