Throughout the history, people have been attracted by the beauty of the opposite sex. As medical technology developed in 20th century, there also has been a significant improvement in plastic surgery, which was originally developed to restore the form and function of the body. At first, not many people underwent the surgery, probably because it was expensive and dangerous. However, it does not explain why there were so many people who hided that they had plastic surgery. As several students in my class said that plastic surgery is only for wealthy people, it may cause other people to feel relatively deprived and consequently feel jealous of people who can afford plastic surgery. People who become beautiful by plastic surgery may also think that their beauty is not their own, so they may want to hide the dark past and only show the good aspects to the public.
The author of the article argues that the rise of plastic surgery is connected to media coverage. As people were more exposed to what plastic surgery is and how it is going to affect them, they are more inclined to have cosmetic surgeries ever than before. The television shows such as Extreme Makeover also had a great influence towards people, because it has made it okay to have plastic surgery without hiding it. The program succeeded in changing the perceptions of surgery, since many people in the program originally suffered from their appearances and it seemed that the plastic surgery could be their only solution to this problem.
However, it also blurs the boundary between cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. People who saw the television show may say that the plastic surgery is necessary for some people, but the definition of “necessity” is not clear; there should be a reason for everyone to pay much money and take high risk to change their face. Although it is people’s own decision to have plastic surger, it can incur a social problem in that it instigates lookism and illegal practice.
The author says that the show rewards a beautiful appearance to the moral individual. Okay, then the show should reward “every” moral individual. If it fails to do that, it is only intensifying the gap between the rich and the poor. Since the definition of “beauty” is different for everyone, people cannot reach their goal to become beautiful forever, and some people become addicted to plastic surgery and never satisfied with their appearance after taking surgery dozens of times. Since the price of surgery is expensive, they are tempted by cheap price and get illegal practice, which definitely leads to side effect. The society we are looking for should be a society that nobody requires plastic surgery, not everybody gets plastic surgery. We cannot say that plastic surgery is “bad”, and I may not have the right to define the desirable society, but it is clear that people should be happy with whom they are, and taking plastic surgery means that they are not happy.
